The Atticus Group
Founded in 2001 by Coats Guiles and Daniel Karslake, the Atticus Group is an entertainment production company dedicated to creating projects that promote discussion across a range of contemporary issues.

Atticus’ debuted on Broadway in 2002 as Associate Producers of the critically acclaimed production of LA BOHEME, directed by Baz Luhrmann.  The winner of three Tony Awards as well as a nomination for Best Revival of a Musical, BOHEME also completed a sold-out run at The Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles.

In 2003, Atticus worked closely with the California-based Deaf West Theatre to bring their ground-breaking revival of BIG RIVER from a small theatre in Los Angeles to the American Airlines Theatre on Broadway.  Performed by a cast of both deaf and hearing actors, BIG RIVER received two 2003 Tony nominations including Best Revival of a Musical and recently completed a highly successful national tour.  Other current projects include:

  • The stage adaptation of PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS, based on the novel by Allan Gurganus.  Commissioned by Atticus, this play premiered at Manbites Dog Theatre in Durham, NC and is slated for a New York premiere in 2006.
  • The feature-length documentary film FOR THE BIBLE TELLS ME SO (currently in post-production) is scheduled for wide theatrical release in 2006.  Described as BOWLING FOR COLUMBINE meets the intersection of religion and homosexuality in America, the project will examine how the Bible has been misinterpreted and misused by the religious right in order to diminish and oppress.  [www.forthebibletellsmeso.org

Independently, Coats brings to Atticus over a decade of marketing acumen as a renown branding and advertising strategist to many of the top Fortune 50 companies, including projects for brands as diverse as Pepsi, the U.S. Army, Gatorade, Chanel, the New York Police Department, and Armani.  As such, Atticus is committed to testing all marketing elements for each project to ensure that the broader strategies and creative elements come together in the most effective manner possible.

Dan’s background is both in non-profit development and television production.  As a fund-raiser, he has raised millions for higher education, cancer and AIDS research and a Harlem-based homeless shelter and food pantry.  As a producer for television, Dan has produced numerous award-winning long-form segments for the national news magazine IN THE LIFE which airs monthly across the country on PBS.
